Shooting with Intent: The Fine Art Approach
January 31 - February 4, 2011

In recent years, there is a preference in the fine art world towards photographic projects and images produced with a strong intent. To support photographic artists who choose to produce work during their travels, this workshop will explore specific ways to approach image making while on the road.

Shooting with intent teaches thoughtful methods of communicating unique ideas about unfamiliar cultures and environments through an emphasis on taking time to understand and examine the culture in new ways. We will set goals (that can change and evolve as the week continues), determine stories we want to tell, and study ways of cataloguing or expressing what we are seeing to create stronger visual statements. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of cameras (including film and toy cameras), and be exposed to a number of photographic genres including typologies and typographies to classify information.

Workshop participants will be supported to work toward creating a cohesive series of images upon the trip’s completion. Additionally, the work will be taken to the next level by creating statements and editing images to construct strong, cohesive projects that can be submitted to exhibitions, magazines, and e-zines. Aline will share her knowledge of the fine art market and guide students to return with enlightened ways of seeing the world, creating work, and the skills to market that work.

Aline will be in communication prior to the workshop’s start to help focus each participant’s individual interests.
